SQL stands for Structured Query Language, an ANSI-standard programming language used to interface with and manage data in relational database management systems. Standard SQL commands such as “Select”, “Insert”, “Update”, “Delete”, “Create”, and “Drop” are used to retrieve or modify data in a database.
The basic structure of a database is a series of tables, each consisting of rows and columns. Fundamentally, a database table is much like a “spreadsheet with named columns”, with data stored in rows according to the types permitted in each of the columns. A database is typically capable of handling much larger datasets than would be practical in a spreadsheet. SQL provides a standard way to view and manage all of the data in a database. Basic SQL queries can be very simple, yet SQL is a powerful language capable of performing advanced and highly complex database operations.
