Using Test Scores to Evaluate School Performance

School Rankings
According to recent data, math and reading proficiency among high school seniors in both public and private U.S. schools is trending down.

The U.S. Department of Education has found that only 26% of high school seniors nationwide are proficient or above in math and only 38% are proficient or above in reading. The tests are administered every four years and results are offered to the public through the Nation’s Report Card.

Unfortunately, scores on these tests were lower than they were four years ago. Cornelia Orr, Executive Director of the National Assessment Governing Board, which sets the standards for the test, commented:

“If I were a parent and I was wanting my students to do better so the country could compete internationally, I would want to see improvement year after year, and we are not seeing that, so it is very disappointing.”

Results Vary by State

Among the 13 states that released their results, Connecticut had the best test scores: about 50% of seniors were proficient or above in reading and 32% were proficient in math.

West Virginia seniors had the lowest scores, with only 14% of seniors proficient or above in math (28% in reading).
