A new report reveals that the young adults of generation Y, born between 1979 and 1995, crave walkable neighborhoods more than their older counterparts do.

Emerging Trends in Real Estate 2014, published by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and the Urban Land Institute, found that 76% of gen Yers cited walkability as a highly desirable community feature.

Walkability is also prized by other generations – just not to the same extent. 67% of Gen Xers and Baby Boomers identified walkability as a highly desirable feature, and War Babies were slightly more interested than that at 69%.

The full list of community features ranked highly by gen Yers are…

  • Short distance to work and school (82%)
  • Walkability (76%)
  • Proximity to shopping and entertainment (71%)
  • Convenience of public transportation (57%)

Serve Generation Y with Maponics Context Walkability Data

Maponics Context Walkability™ is a comprehensive and customizable dataset that delivers walkability ratings for Maponics Neighborhood Boundaries, School Boundaries, ZIP Code Boundaries and more.

Context Walkability enables real estate brokers/agents, appraisers, investors and other real estate professionals to assess geographies based on their level of pedestrian friendliness. A high walkability score signifies a community in which it’s easier to walk to points of interest such as coffee shops, schools, parks and entertainment.

To satisfy Gen Yers’ preference for public transportation, Context Commuter Scores can point customers to the areas with the most bikability and public transportation offerings (as well as those that are the most drivable).
