Today Maponics announced that we have acquired Urban Mapping’s neighborhood database and product. We made the purchase for a number of reasons; with the most important being a tremendous opportunity to learn from Urban Mapping’s product and apply to apply those learnings to Maponics’ products going forward. Urban Mapping has invested more than 10 years in building a database and product improvements based on usage from some of the most experienced GIS experts in the industry. All of Maponics customers will benefit from this information. Maponics will apply what we learn to our existing product roadmap with the goal of accelerating some of the planned improvements including additional coverage, expanded inventory of names, and possible new product features for Maponics such as Urban Mapping’s Local Relevance Index.
While Maponics’ neighborhood product and the Urban Mapping product often competed for the same end users, the products have some fundamental differences in how we model neighborhoods.
Our next step is to talk with customers that have chosen the Urban Mapping product to better understand how they are using the data and to determine the best path forward. We will continue to support continuity for all Urban Mapping’s customers.
We will also enter into a deep analysis of the two databases. There is a unique opportunity for Maponics to examine two independently created products and determine what is the same, what is different and— most interesting— what is in the grey area of “mostly the same”.
Neighborhoods boundaries are not always exact, and the nuances of how to model them are complex. The bringing together of Maponics and Urban Mapping neighborhood data models, databases and products is going to create opportunities for us to better serve our customers and to fulfill the Maponics mission to deliver detailed intelligence and insight into the locations that matter most to our customers.
Sincerely, Dan Adams
